Willis Carrier presents his Rational Psychrometric Formulae
After discovering that "constant dew-point depression provided practically constant relative humidity," Willis Carrier designed an automatic control system, for which he filed a patent claim on May 17, 1907. This later became known among air conditioning engineers as the "law of constant dew-point depression."
Willis Carrier's "Rational Psychrometric Formulae" tied together the concepts of relative humidity, absolute humidity, and dew-point temperature thus enabling the design of air-conditioning systems to precisely fit the requirements at hand. Carrier presented it at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in December 3, 1911 and it went on to become the "Magna Carta of Psychrometrics."

Dec. 8, 2011, marks the 100-year anniversary of the rational psychrometric formulae, the cornerstone of all fundamental calculations in the air-conditioning industry, developed by Willis Carrier, founder of , the Farmington, Conn.-based provider of air-conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems.
Willis Carrier's Rational Psychrometric Formulae brought science to what had been the often hit-or-miss design of air-conditioning systems, and in the process made Carrier an international name. Today marks the 100th anniversary of the Rational Psychrometric Formulae, the cornerstone of all fundamental calculations in the air conditioning industry, developed by inventor Dr. Willis Carrier, founder of Carrier, the world’s leader in high technology heating, air conditioning and refrigeration solutions.
Less than a decade after inventing modern air conditioning in 1902, Carrier’s research and development efforts came together in the single most famous and enduring document ever prepared on air conditioning, the “Rationale Psychrometric Formulae.” Called the Magna Carta of Psychrometrics, the document helps determine the precise correlation between temperature and humidity to create a comfortable environment year-round.Businessman, Inventor. Born in Angola, New York, he was engineer, most noted for inventing modern air conditioning. Educated at Cornell University, he started working at the Buffalo Forge Company in 1901. In 1902, he designed the first system to control temperature and humidity. His Rational Psychrometric Formulae introduced in 1911, initiated scientific air-conditioning design for home and industrial use. In 1915, he co-founded the Carrier Engineering Company, which became the world's largest manufacturer of air-conditioning equipment. Carrier was purchased by United Technologies Corporation in 1979. He died at age 73 in New York City and was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1985. He also was named one of TIME magazines 100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century, in 1998.
