Champion of the World by Maya Angelou is a chapter from her novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. It is about a boxing match between the African American Joe Louis and a white contender. It is a short story about how important this fight is to the African American race. It focuses on the fight and the many reactions it produces. When Joe Louis wins the fight, it is a victory for all African Americans because he is the champion of the world. This represents the African American race rising above everything they have been subjected to over time. According to Angelou, if Louis loses then everything that has been done to them is justified because all assumptions about African Americans could be true. If he wins (which he does), his victory over the white contender represents his race becoming equal, if not better.
