Offered as part of the Professional Studies Degree Completion only.Ashford University was established during 1893 and originally named Mount St Clare Academy within Clinton, Iowa. As the need for higher education was recognized by local organizers, the university began as a boarding school for young women. During 1918, the school was officially recognized as a liberal arts institution and assumed the name Mount St. Clare College. From 1932, until 1954, the college operated as a teacher education college. During this time, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredited the college during 1950. Following accreditation, the college expanded its grounds and course offerings. During 1967, the college transitioned to a coeducational institution and in 1979 was approved to offer bachelor degrees in business administration. During 2003, the college changed its name to the Franciscan University but due to confusion with other area schools, extended its name to the Franciscan University of the Prairies. The launch of the college’s first online programs for masters degrees occurred during 2004 but due to financial difficulties adversely affected the organization. During 2005, the college was acquired by Bridgepoint Education and was renamed Ashford University. The university was accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools that year and quickly expanded its online and online campus degree programs. The University developed 50 fields of study and focused upon the 99% of its students enrolled in online programs managing career or family responsibilities while pursuing studies.
